1. Are there many street markets in your country?
Absolutely! Street food and markets are a huge part of my culture. Many, no matter rich or poor, go to the streets in the morning to pick up the freshest produce from the street vendors. The thing is that the street produce is the best quality and price! You simply cannot find fish or crabs straight out of the water onto your plate in a supermarket.
2. Do you like going to street markets?
I love it! I love the whole experience of seeing people selling their products, as well as I believe that the freshest produce comes from there. I would much rather go to a street market than a large name brand supermarket, where the product is treated with pesticides and other chemicals to keep it from perishing.
3. Do you prefer to go shopping in the shopping mall or on the street market?
I can't really choose between the two because I love shopping in those places. Well, what I like about the shopping mall is that it has a wide variety of choices. I can buy anything I want and it's pretty convenient. Shopping at the street markets is incredibly fun because I get to discover some valuable things that are cheaper. Besides, I enjoy haggling with salesmen which I can't do in the shopping mall.
4. When was the last time you went to a street market?
Just yesterday! I was so stressed out thinking of this IELTS exam that I needed to divert my attention. I went to the nearest street market in our town and bought some snacks which I've brought with me today. I guess after this exam, I'll drop by at some street markets in this city before I leave home.
5. When you travel abroad, do you go to street markets?
It's such a shame to say that I've never been abroad, well, if I get the chance to travel or live in a foreign land, I will surely visit one. I want to explore their street markets and see the differences from the street markets here in my country. I think that'll be fun.
Yes, I do, that's always a part of my itinerary because for me that's the best place to interact with the local people. I remember I had a memorable experience in one of the street markets in Chiang Mai in Thailand, I was able to buy some souvenirs and T-shirts at a very affordable price and the saleswoman was very accommodating, she even taught me some practical Thai expressions.
6. What do street markets sell? |
What do people usually buy at the street market?
I’d say the most common items are fresh fruits and vegetables, maybe even meats or fish as well. However, the farmer’s markets in my town tend to only sell fruits, vegetables, and local products such as honey from their bee farming.
More often than not, people buy homemade products like bread, cookies, jam, and the like. They also buy some handicrafts, clothes, and inexpensive electronic devices. In my opinion, buying those stuff from street markets is good because customers are helping small businesses to flourish.
7. Do you think people like street markets?
Definitely. No matter what your economic status is, there is always something for you. Moreover, our street markets are famed for freshness and quality at the lowest prices, so why would dislike that? On the other hand, some people fear being ripped off, so they avoid the street markets.
8. What is the difference between street markets and supermarkets?
Street markets have fresher products and usually involve local people or farmers coming to sell their products, whereas supermarkets sell more commercialized products. Although street market food may be tasty and fresh, supermarket food can be safer since they have tighter restrictions from the FDA.
Well, a street market is usually a group of small vendors that sell items independently in a booth, they normally rent a booth from the organizers. They sell some retailed items or they sell their own products or produce. While a supermarket is one company that is a retailer of many kinds of products. Undeniably, the prices of their items are way more expensive than those in street markets.
9. Do you like shopping online or going out shopping?
Well, I prefer shopping online for several reasons. Firstly, it's a more convenient way of shopping as all I need to make a purchase is just a smartphone or laptop connected to the Internet. This saves a great deal of travel time and cost. Additionally, I can get access to a broad selection of products from thousands of stores across the country within a few clicks, while there are only a few options of offline stores in my neighborhood.
10. What is the difference between shopping with friends and shopping alone?
Shopping with friends is for sure funnier than shopping alone. You can discuss the latest trends in clothing and footwear with them, take some photos while you shop, or get some useful advice from them about which styles to choose. Meanwhile, shopping alone means you have to rely on your own judgments and make your own decisions, which sometimes leads to an unwise choice of items.
11. What are the disadvantages of shopping in a big mall?
In large shopping malls, it’s unlikely to get any kind of advice or instruction about a product, and you have to rely on your own judgment when making a purchase.
Meanwhile, at smaller shops or at the street markets, the sellers are more than willing to show you details about their goods to draw your attention. Another disadvantage is that most major shopping centers are located in the suburbs, so it’s only possible to go by car.
