Learn English Through Topics. Environment. Part 2. Speaking. Ask and Answer.

1. Is there anything in your hometown that is being polluted?

Yes, and I would say pretty much everything is polluted there. Air quality has deteriorated at an alarming rate. One literally cannot go out without wearing a medical face mask. The same goes for the streets, as people tend to litter indiscriminately.

2. What causes pollution?

It's hard to tell, but I would put the blame on the people who disrespect their surroundings by constantly littering and ignoring how the environment is degrading day by day. As pollution is linked to all types of social and economic issues, we must all be aware of the destruction we're causing on our own.

3. Have you ever done anything to help protect the environment?

Not in a direct way, to be honest. Although I'm well aware of my responsibilities to the environment, it's really difficult to contribute anything when you're just a student. So I would say, by not littering indiscriminately on the streets and not using so many plastic bags, I have done a little bit to help.

4. Do you think pollution is a big problem nowadays?

Yes, definitely. Air and water pollution are huge issues in the modern world... The air pollution problem is especially grave due to the increasing amount of exhaust fumes, which are produced by cars, and result in poor air quality.

5. What do you do to prevent our environment from pollution?

A lot of things... First of all, I don't litter. Also, my family and I try to buy only environmentally friendly goods whenever we can... And finally, I try to save trees... I print on both sides of every sheet of paper I use and use any leftover white space to scribble notes.

6. Have you ever participated in any environmental events?

Yes, of course! Last year I participated in an event in my hometown, which was all about preserving nature... We were taught about the greenhouse effect and I learned about many endangered species in the world.

7. Describe an environmental problem or event.

I would like to talk about global warming. In my opinion, it is a big, if not the biggest problem that we are facing nowadays. The main reason for global warming is the greenhouse effect ... Nowadays people are producing excessive amounts of greenhouse gases, mostly by burning fossil fuels. These gases let sunlight in, which warms the Earth, and then block that heat from leaving... That breaks the delicate natural balance and causes our planet to warm... As global warming changes the climate on the whole planet, it affects all countries in the world and causes many serious problems... For example, global warming causes the melting of glaciers, which in turn raises the sea level... Eventually, coastal areas are flooding and agriculture is damaged unless appropriate measures are taken... As it is a worldwide problem, I think that only joint efforts will help us to overcome this issue.

8. In which way do people damage our planet?

Er... In my point of view, we damage the Earth in many ways. Just take a look at all those factories that empty toxic waste into rivers and lakes... People also destroy a lot of natural areas in search of fossil fuels. Not to mention poaching and endangering wild animals.

9. In your opinion, who should be responsible for environmental pollution, the government or companies?

Well, it is hard to tell whether this problem completely belongs to any party to solve, but I may say that every individual and organization on this planet has the duty to protect our living space. Indeed, as the pollution can proliferate and ingrain itself in any region, it would be no use if we just focus on protecting the environment of one specific place with the support of the authorities and people concerned. Therefore, this communal matter must be tackled by not only governments or organizations but also anyone living on the earth.

10. Is it important to sort garbage?

From my perspective, in various parts of the world, garbage is put randomly together without any kind of classification, and later on, it is treated in the same way. Thus, the surrounding environment is seriously jeopardized, so sorting garbage is a must. To put it simply, if garbage is put in different bins according to its types such as organics, plastics, toxic or paper, it is much easier for the government to treat them using several different methods in order to diminish the detrimental effects of the garbage on the environment.

11. Do you think recycling is important?

I think that most people agree recycling is important. Recycling reduces the need to grow, harvest, or extract new raw materials from the Earth. That, in turn, reduces the harmful disruption and damage being done to the natural world, which means fewer forests cut down, rivers diverted, wild animals harmed or displaced, and less pollution.

12. Do you like growing plants?

Well, to be honest, I don’t have a green thumb, so it is quite impossible for me to grow any kind of plant. Therefore, I just buy some small plants from the market to decorate my house.

13. Were you taught how to protect the environment when you were a child?

To tell the truth, there were several lessons about environmental protection back in my primary and high schools, but they were just for reference. Thus, it is not really helping children to have an awareness of their surrounding environment.

14. Do you think that the environmental situation will improve in the nearest future?

Yes, I would like to believe so... People are getting more and more aware of the major environmental issues that we're dealing with nowadays... I hope that we will get back to nature and start caring about our planet more.

Learn English Through Topics. Weather. Part 2. Speaking. Ask and Answer.

1. How is the weather today?

Well, I think today is a lovely day, even though it rained a little bit this morning. When I got out of the house, the weather seemed to brighten up and I hope it will stay like that for the rest of the day.

2. What’s your favorite kind of weather?

I'm actually not fond of any particular kind of weather, you know. I think every season has its own unique beauty and it's up to us to enjoy it. For example, not many people like the freezing weather in the winter, but I see it as a perfect occasion for me to bundle up and show off my clothes.

3. What is the climate like in your country?

Vietnam is a tropical country, you know, so the climate here is quite hot and humid. What upsets me the most is that the weather is getting more unpredictable. It can rain dogs and cats in the morning and suddenly clear out in the afternoon.

4. Does the weather affect people’s lives in your country?

I believe that the weather always affects us in every aspect. If it is a gloomy day, I'm pretty sure everyone will easily get bored or tired of whatever they are doing. In contrast, the sunny days make us feel alive and upbeat

5. Do people change in the summer?

It can get sweltering in the summery months, so I think it will impact people's temperament. Everyone becomes less patient than usual, and they often get frustrated and upset over trivial matters.

6. What’s the weather like in your country each season?

Well, I was born and grew up in a tropical country, so it’s pretty much hot and humid all year round. However, in Northern cities, we actually enjoy four distinct seasons. In summery months, it can get really sweltering, and by contrast, temperatures can really dip in winter.

7.  What type of weather do you like best?

I’d consider myself a cold-weather person. I love the crisp mornings at the end of fall and the chill of winter. Maybe it’s because we have to bundle up as the weather turns cold, and I love wearing sweaters and overcoats.

8. Does the weather ever affect what you do?

You know, I gotta say yes, especially when it rains. I mean, I cannot go out and run my errands if it’s pouring outside. The roads get slippery, so it’s quite dangerous to drive. Besides, you will be soaked if you do decide to go out.

9. Does it rain a lot in your hometown?

Well, it depends on the season. In winter and spring, there is a dearth of rain associated with the arid weather. In contrast, it is usually raining cats and dogs in summer and august, causing loads of trouble for people traveling on the road.

10. Does rain ever affect transportation in your hometown?

Yeah, of course. Traffic is often held up when it rains. All the roads are clogged, and people find it difficult to escape from traffic congestion. I would stay at home and watch TV rather than going out and being caught up in traffic.

ACCOUNTING Common Knowledge #1

*Note: The following content has been chosen and collected from various sources |
Nội dung tài liệu sau đây được sưu tầm và tổng hợp từ nhiều nguồn khác nhau.

Learn English Through Topics. Accounting. Part 1. Vocabulary.

Learn English Through Topics. Accounting. Part 2. Speaking. Ask and Answer.

1. What are the different types of accounting?

- Financial Accounting – This branch of accounting records, summarises and reports the business transactions that take place over a time period in an organization. It is required in both the private and public sectors
- Administrative Accounting – Administrative accounting is focused on the administrative aspects of the company and is used above all to assess the fulfillment of the established objectives and improve the implemented strategy. It is very useful for making forecasts and planning the actions and resources to be used.
- Tax Accounting -Tax accounting helps to register and prepare reports related to tax returns to the public treasury and payment of taxes.
- Cost Accounting – This type of accounting is more focused on companies of an industrial nature. It helps to make a detailed analysis of the unit costs of production, sales, and, in general, the production process that the company carries out.
- Management Accounting – Management accounting has a broader vision than cost accounting since it records all the economic and financial information of the company to be able to make short-term and long-term decisions.

2. Which accounting platforms have you worked on? Which one do you prefer the most?

*Note: Describe the accounting platforms (QuickBooks, Microsoft Dynamic GP, etc.) that you have worked with and which one you liked the most.
Show you have a good understanding of the accounting platform you use. You can further specify what type of businesses use them. Generally, small and growing enterprises use the affordable plan of  QuickBooks Online for creating invoices, tracking expenses, and utilizing the software’s built-in reports.

3. What is working capital?
Working capital is calculated as current assets minus current liabilities, which is used in day-to-day trading.
In a simple accounting scheme, the concept of working capital focuses on the capital resources that a given company can count on in the short term to operate. These resources owned by the company are the cash, the portfolio of financial products, and other investments made by the company.

4. Give a suggestion to improve the company’s working capital flow.
In my opinion, the stock on hand can be the key to improving the working capital of the company. Of all the components of working capital, the stock is something we can control. We can pressure our debtors to pay us instantly, but we cannot have direct control over them because they are separate legal entities and, in the end, they are the ones who give us business.

We may tend to delay payments from our suppliers, but it ruins business relationships and hinders goodwill in the industry. Also, if we delay payments, they may not supply goods in the future. Maintaining liquidity in the form of funds in the bank can help the flow of working capital, but it comes at an opportunity cost.

With all of this in mind, I personally believe that inventory management can be of great help in improving the working capital of the company. Over-stock should be avoided and stock turnover rates should be high.

5. How do you maintain accounting accuracy?
Maintaining the accuracy of an organization’s accounting is an important activity as it can result in a huge loss. Various tools and resources can be used to limit the potential for errors to creep in and address them quickly if any errors arise. My favorite is MS Excel.
Some of the most common ways of maintaining accuracy in accounting are:
Identify revenue streams
Keep a close eye on invoices and receipts
Prepare tax returns to avoid penalty
Prepare financial statements
Keep tabs on deductible expenses

6. Since you mentioned that MS Excel is your favorite, please give us three cases where Excel will make your life easier.
Excel saves a lot of time. Automating repetitive and predictable tasks with macros is one example. This allows one to format, filter and analyze vast sets of data within seconds.
Excel is highly customizable. Accountants need to create reports with tables and charts in excel. The same can be re-used for creating other reports without having to use or create new templates.
Excel is convenient for comparing financial datasets. It helps one in tracking financial records and see from which source the cash flow is generating.

7.  What is the difference between ‘accounts payable (AP)’ and ‘accounts receivable (AR)’?
Accounts Payable: The amount a company owes because it purchased goods or services on credit from a vendor or supplier. Accounts payable are liabilities.
Accounts Receivable: The amount a company has the right to collect because it sold goods or services on credit to a customer. Accounts receivable are assets.

8. What are the common mistakes in accounting?
The most common mistakes in accounting are:
- Mixing personal accounts with that of the company
- Little communication between the company and the accountant
- Not keeping a backup
- Misallocated resources
- Not saving the receipts
- Performing manual accounting
- Not keeping the accounting books up to date.

13. He's very gentle with his kids.

14. Animals belong in nature and it is cruel to keep them confined in a home or cage.

Learn English Through Topics. Pets. Part 2. Speaking. Ask and Answer.

1. Why do some people keep pets at home?

I think we would all agree that pets are loyal companions to humans. Especially for those who adopt pets when they were just newborns, these animals are like precious children to many families.

2. Have you ever had a pet before?

I used to have a puppy corgi when I was a kid. He and I were best friends, actually. I remember taking him to the park, feeding him with milk, and training him with many cool tricks. Sadly, when I got older, I discovered that I am allergic to dog fur, so I had to give him away.

3. Do you like to see animals in the zoo?

I've been to the zoo once, so I can't really tell whether I'm into it. It was good to see exotic animals like lions or giraffes when you were a kid. But when I got older, I've come to realize that zoos are no different from prisons for animals, where they are caged and locked away from their natural habitat.

4. What is the most popular animal in Vietnam?

I suppose the most popular animal in my country is the dog. A lot of Vietnamese children grow up with fond memories about their puppies as their childhood best friends. Besides, you can see that there are many dog rescue groups in the main cities, which aims to save dogs from being abandoned or kidnapped.

5. Do you like to have a pet?

Yes, I do, however, I’m living in an apartment and our landlady doesn’t allow us to keep pets in our units. She doesn’t want to hear noises from dogs or cats as they may disturb other occupants. Well, there’s nothing I can do but obey the rule.

6. Have you ever had a pet when you were young?

Yes, I had, I had a black and dappled labrador dog. He’s a very faithful and playful dog, I remember, every time I came back home from school, he always jumped on me and licked my face. Oh, I miss those days but I know he’s in dog heaven now.

7. What animals you would like to have as pets?

Well like most people love having, I want dogs or cats! I love dogs as they are loyal and playful. Not to mention they can serve as guards in our houses. Also, I want to keep cats because they’re independent and I enjoy listening to them when they purr.

8. What is a popular pet to have in your country?

Almost everybody in my country love having dogs as pets because they are loyal and adorable. Dogs are known for their unconditional love for their owners, and are great comfort for people who live alone, especially those with mental health problems.

9.  Are there any kinds of animals that should not be kept as pets?

Of course! Most animals should not be kept as pets. I think that certain animals domesticated themselves over hundreds or thousands of years and it is reasonable to keep them because they are no longer truly wild. But animals belong in nature and it is cruel to keep them confined in a home or cage.

10. Why do some people think that it is a good idea to give children pets?

Well, it is a parent’s responsibility to teach their child compassion and understanding, and one of the time-tested ways to do this is by giving them a pet to look after. Ideally, this should be something like a goldfish or rabbit that is pretty easy to take care of. There are lots of lessons that a child can learn from this sort of experience, including how to feed the animal and clean it, and how to be gentle around other living things. If the experience is handled well, I think that having a pet could be a tremendously positive experience for more kids. That’s why parents are so keen to bring animals into the house.

17. Stress is often one of the downsides of life in the fast lane

18. I had a full-time job and earned a good salary and an extra income from some freelance projects during my free time.

Learn English Through Topics. Save money. Part 2. Speaking. Ask and Answer.

1. Are you good at saving money?

Well, I've to admit that I'm not. I'm an impulsive buyer so saving money has always been a serious issue for me. Yes I really do know that I should prepare for the rainy days but I just can't help myself, every time I see something that catches my attention, I buy them at once.

2. What kinds of things do people save money for?

I'm not really sure because every person has different needs or wants so I can only assume, perhaps, people save money for material things such as cars, the latest gadgets, or even a house. Some may set aside some amount of money for traveling or for education like pursuing a Master's degree.

3. Did you save money when you were young?

Yes, ever since I was a child, my parents have taught me about the value of money. Back then, my only source of income was the lucky money I received during Tet festivals. I established my own piggy bank and fed it with every dollar I got. So far, the pig is quite big, you know.

4. Have you ever given money to other children?

Yes, but not in a direct way. A few years ago, my school started a fund-raising campaign to support the underprivileged students in the North of Vietnam. I remember donating a majority of my allowance and some of my discarded clothes to the fund.

5. Do you think parents should teach children to save money?

Yes, I’m convinced that parents should instill some financial literacy in their kids. They should be aware of how to spend, save, or even donate money in an appropriate way. Money management is definitely one of the must-learn skills for everybody who wishes to live independently.

6. Do parents give pocket money in Vietnam?

Of course, they do. I would say that Vietnamese parents are quite relaxed when it comes to giving their children pocket money. I even know some moms, who are trying to teach their kids some responsibilities and use allowance as rewards for them every time they perfectly finish a household chore.

7. Describe a time that you saved money for something.

“I had to save a large sum of money when I bought my first car for more conveniently traveling to work. I can’t remember the exact date, but I suspect it’s 6 years ago.
On top of that, this was when I left home to live independently, and I wanted to pay my own way, so I refused to lend money from my parents. It all seems that I was living on the breadline and couldn’t afford this purchase. Fortunately, I had a full-time job and earned a good salary and an extra income from some freelance projects during my free time. But it may take years to get enough money to buy my car if I just kept living in the fast lane. So, to save money, I decided to cut down on luxuries and avoid exceeding my agreed credit limit. Then, I called my financial consultant and accepted a bank loan for my purchase. Also, I didn’t miss this opportunity to get a good deal as the car price was going cheap, and finally, I can drive to work every day.
I was very comfortable with my car and satisfied with my saving. But I think the point is I learn a saving lesson and make my saving habit for bigger money like buying a house in the future.”

8. Do young Vietnamese like to save money?

For some young people, especially females, saving money is the thing they did on regular basis. Some males, often squander their money on unnecessary expensive clothes. Although these people can make big money or money would never be in short supply, I think they should start saving money.

9. Do you agree with the idea that the more you save, the better life will be?

I don’t think so. Although saving money is a wise decision for financial freedom, I think there are more things to do with their money rather than just keep it in the bank. People should save money to avoid living on the breadline, then they can invest to make a big money and become seriously rich.

10. Why do some people like to save money?

I think the main reason why many people save money is that they are afraid of possible financial difficulties. So, they never throw money around purchasing unnecessary things, and of course, they seem to never borrow heavily to get into debt.

11. What is the best way of saving money?

Everyone has their own way of saving money. I guess the best way this open a bank account and keep a healthy bank balance. This way may suit those who have a steady income and intend to supplement it. Another way would be to cut down on luxuries and don’t pay out a lot of money on unnecessary.

12. What are the consequences of not saving money?

Without saving money, I think people will get into trouble with their personal finance. Many people didn’t think about saving even when they were young, and they cannot keep afloat when they moved out. They kept borrowing heavily and exceeding their credit. The final consequences may be that they cannot pay off their debt or could be close to personal bankruptcy.

  18. I can get a bit drowsy after a heavy lunch. (buồn ngủ 1 chút)
  19. You must leave one rest day a week to help your body re-energize itself. (tái tạo năng lượng)

1. How many hours do you usually sleep at night?

I usually spend like five to six hours a day on sleeping, which is not really recommended by doctors, I know. What's worse is that I'm only in my early 20s but I'm already experiencing something called sleep deprivation. There are days when I cannot even shut my eyes down in the middle of the night.

2. Do you like to get up early in the morning?

Unlike a lot of youngsters my age, I like getting up early in the morning to prepare myself for a new day. I used to be a jogger, spending at least 30 minutes a day on running and doing exercises in the park. But since Hanoi is overly polluted now, that habit has to stop so I tend to oversleep a lot these days.

3. How to have a good sleep?

I think the answer to this question really depends. For me, having a light dinner with no proteins might get me to sleep better. There are times when I become so desperate that I have to resort to sleeping pills, which I believe many others are depending on for a good night's sleep.

4. Do you have a nap during the day?

I think this is a good question. I usually don't spend my lunch break on sleeping at the office, but I often nod off many times during work hours. My boss is very sympathetic about this, though, since she knows my job requires endless hours of sitting in front of a computer screen.

5. Do you think sleep is important?

Yes, of course. From my perspective, sleeping plays an important role in people’s physical and psychological health. It’s the time for our body to take a rest after a long day. A good night’s sleep also helps us release our emotions and forget all the bad things that happened during the day. Just sleep on it to rise and shine on the next morning, you’ll see that early bird gets the worm.

6. How much sleep is best for you?

I’ve heard that 8 hours of sleep is the best amount of sleep that is needed for adults. But I tend to disagree with that. It seems that I can function just as well with 7 hours of sleep.

7. Is it necessary to take a nap every day?

Yes, I believe that after having lunch at noon, it’s beneficial for body to take a nap, half of hour would be enough, to brace for the tasks in the afternoon.

8. Do old people sleep a lot? Why?

Yes, I guess the elderly people do need to sleep more. I believe the reason is that after years of working, stress and the natural process breaks down people’s body until all they want to do is sleep, consequently, their bodies take longer to recharge the batteries.

  27. Shopping at the street markets has become part and parcel of Vietnamese daily lives.

1. Are there many street markets in your country?

Absolutely! Street food and markets are a huge part of my culture.  Many, no matter rich or poor, go to the streets in the morning to pick up the freshest produce from the street vendors. The thing is that the street produce is the best quality and price! You simply cannot find fish or crabs straight out of the water onto your plate in a supermarket.

2. Do you like going to street markets?

I love it! I love the whole experience of seeing people selling their products, as well as I believe that the freshest produce comes from there. I would much rather go to a street market than a large name brand supermarket, where the product is treated with pesticides and other chemicals to keep it from perishing.

3. Do you prefer to go shopping in the shopping mall or on the street market?

I can't really choose between the two because I love shopping in those places. Well, what I like about the shopping mall is that it has a wide variety of choices. I can buy anything I want and it's pretty convenient. Shopping at the street markets is incredibly fun because I get to discover some valuable things that are cheaper. Besides, I enjoy haggling with salesmen which I can't do in the shopping mall.

4. When was the last time you went to a street market?

Just yesterday! I was so stressed out thinking of this IELTS exam that I needed to divert my attention. I went to the nearest street market in our town and bought some snacks which I've brought with me today. I guess after this exam, I'll drop by at some street markets in this city before I leave home.

5. When you travel abroad, do you go to street markets?

It's such a shame to say that I've never been abroad, well, if I get the chance to travel or live in a foreign land, I will surely visit one. I want to explore their street markets and see the differences from the street markets here in my country. I think that'll be fun.

Yes, I do, that's always a part of my itinerary because for me that's the best place to interact with the local people. I remember I had a memorable experience in one of the street markets in Chiang Mai in Thailand, I was able to buy some souvenirs and T-shirts at a very affordable price and the saleswoman was very accommodating, she even taught me some practical Thai expressions.

6. What do street markets sell? |
What do people usually buy at the street market?

I’d say the most common items are fresh fruits and vegetables, maybe even meats or fish as well. However, the farmer’s markets in my town tend to only sell fruits, vegetables, and local products such as honey from their bee farming.

More often than not, people buy homemade products like bread, cookies, jam, and the like. They also buy some handicrafts, clothes, and inexpensive electronic devices. In my opinion, buying those stuff from street markets is good because customers are helping small businesses to flourish.

7. Do you think people like street markets?

Definitely. No matter what your economic status is, there is always something for you. Moreover, our street markets are famed for freshness and quality at the lowest prices, so why would dislike that? On the other hand, some people fear being ripped off, so they avoid the street markets.

8. What is the difference between street markets and supermarkets?

Street markets have fresher products and usually involve local people or farmers coming to sell their products, whereas supermarkets sell more commercialized products. Although street market food may be tasty and fresh, supermarket food can be safer since they have tighter restrictions from the FDA.

Well, a street market is usually a group of small vendors that sell items independently in a booth, they normally rent a booth from the organizers. They sell some retailed items or they sell their own products or produce. While a supermarket is one company that is a retailer of many kinds of products. Undeniably, the prices of their items are way more expensive than those in street markets.

9. Do you like shopping online or going out shopping?

Well, I prefer shopping online for several reasons. Firstly, it's a more convenient way of shopping as all I need to make a purchase is just a smartphone or laptop connected to the Internet. This saves a great deal of travel time and cost. Additionally, I can get access to a broad selection of products from thousands of stores across the country within a few clicks, while there are only a few options of offline stores in my neighborhood.

10. What is the difference between shopping with friends and shopping alone?

Shopping with friends is for sure funnier than shopping alone. You can discuss the latest trends in clothing and footwear with them, take some photos while you shop, or get some useful advice from them about which styles to choose. Meanwhile, shopping alone means you have to rely on your own judgments and make your own decisions, which sometimes leads to an unwise choice of items.

11. What are the disadvantages of shopping in a big mall?

In large shopping malls, it’s unlikely to get any kind of advice or instruction about a product, and you have to rely on your own judgment when making a purchase.

Meanwhile, at smaller shops or at the street markets, the sellers are more than willing to show you details about their goods to draw your attention. Another disadvantage is that most major shopping centers are located in the suburbs, so it’s only possible to go by car.
