Learn English Through Topics. Email. Part 2. Speaking. Sample Questions with Answers.

1. Do you use email?
Of course, I use it almost every day and almost exclusively for work because you know, it is very popular around the globe for corporate communication and it really comes in handy compared to written letters.
2. Do you prefer to use email or text messaging?
Well, I personally prefer texting because what’s quicker than sending a text right? Texting doesn’t require a formal greeting. Besides, texting comes pre-built on mobile phones and, unlike email, is available even without a wifi connection, which makes texting a more accessible medium.
3. Do you think it’s important to reply to emails immediately (or quickly) after you receive them?
Well, I think it’s absolutely crucial to instantly respond to emails because if someone takes a long time to write you back, you’ll probably start to think that they are being discourteous and disrespectful of your time. By sending a quick acknowledgment email, you are being polite, well-mannered, and respectful.
4. Do you often send emails?
Normally it seems like a daily routine for me to write emails to my clients about how to use the system; but if they complain to me about the poor user experience, I sometimes really find myself getting stuck in explaining to comfort them.
5. How often do you send e-mails?
I probably write between 5 and 10 work emails every day, and I send emails to friends or family a few times a week.
6. How often do you check your email?
Well, regularly. Maybe on a daily basis, I would say. Mails are important for me because my work does not allow me to meet as many people for networking, so we mostly connect using emails, delaying the work does not make sense.
7. Do you prefer to write by hand or on a computer?
It depends on what I’m doing. I prefer the computer for most things because it’s faster and you can save or copy things, but I still like making notes or writing ideas down by hand.
8. Do you think emails are useful?
Emails are really useful and important to me. I can use emails to contact people who are staying far away from me, and this really comes in handy as I have lots of foreign friends. Moreover, I can receive notifications of special deals or interesting information through emails by subscribing to any online channels that appeal to me.
9. Do you think people will still write letters in the future?
Well, if I were to choose between the two, I will probably go with writing an email because I can have plenty of time thinking about how to express my opinion correctly and clearly, besides, the whole conversation can be tracked in the mail list; whereas, making a telephone call usually leads to misunderstanding because sometimes it is not very accurate and obscure.
10. When would you send emails to others?
Mostly when I’m at work. I need to send emails about task arrangements and meeting summary to my group members, and I need to send reports to my department supervisor. When I’m off work, I sometimes send emails to my dentist to make an appointment, or to keep connection with my college teachers.
11. Do you think writing emails has strengthened or weakened people’s writing skills?
Definitely strengthened. We are not talking about the informal mails to friends and family where one just sends in message in whatever language they want. But, if talking about the formal mails or the semi-formal mails, people have surely improved. Because earlier it was one to one talk, but now along with talk there are messages being send. And I think writing mails gives an idea of the language as well.
12. What are some of the disadvantages of mails?
I think the major issue with mails is that they carry viruses. So, someone might just drop in a mail having a virus and it can harm the entire computer. In worst cases, it can read out your email address book and send themselves to a number of people around the world. The second issue is that one often gets spam messages, a lot. So, if a person does not know the difference, it surely creates a havoc.
13. Do you think it is a good thing that some companies send out letters/spam emails for the purpose of advertising?
Actually speaking, receiving advertisement emails is a headache as well as it increases the load of mailbox but, due to technological innovations now it has become the safest way to interact with the consumer.
14. Do you like writing letters to your relatives and friends? (why/why not?)
Yes indeed, I like writing letters because it expresses a feeling and as well as it also way to keep a memory which is not possible in the message as it can be deleted anytime.
15. Do you and your friend keep in touch by (handwritten) letter?
No, now as technological advancement is concerned, we do not exchange handwritten letters, but we do write letters in mails as it is a convenient way.
16. What kind of email did you receive recently that made you happy?
Well, I recently completed graduation, but unfortunately, my graduation certificate was misplaced, so I sent an email to the university to reissue my certificate. The university sends a mail that the certificate will be issued within a week that made me happy.
17. Do you like to receive handwritten letters and cards?
Yes, I highly appreciate that. In this fast-paced digital age, if someone especially takes the time to write us a letter or a card by hand, this can only mean they love us so much.
18. Do you think a person’s handwriting reflects their personality?
I do think so. According to graphologists, average handwriting is associated with being adaptable, and wide spacing between words means love for freedom. That’s so true for me.
19. Have emails replaced the letters entirely?
I wouldn't say entirely but to a great extent, emails and instant text messages have replaced letters. Now people don't have to wait for 2-4 days to send a letter, they can communicate conveniently via email. However, some departments like legal, judicial, and formal communications are carried through letters.
